On 22 April 2022, KNX Association launched Version 3.0 of the KNX Standard to its manufacturer members. This was the first major release of the KNX Standard since the publication of Version 2.1 in 2013. This new version is a big leap forward, opening opportunities for both existing as well as new KNX Members.
**KNX IoT 3rd Party API and KNX IoT Point API**
KNX Standard V3.0 is the first official publication of the approved standard versions of the KNX IoT 3rd Party API and the KNX IoT Point API. In this way, Version 3.0 of the entire KNX Standard celebrates the conclusion of the work on the KNX IoT project, which started as early as 2017. These specifications open up a vast new array of development possibilities for KNX members: in addition to designing KNX products based on TP, RF and KNXnet/IP, the specifications add the possibility to interface more easily to KNX Installations via RESTful Web Services and allow manufacturers to also design KNX products using IPv6 networks, such as Thread, as a communication medium.
Of course, it is expected that the KNX IoT specifications are likely to be further improved with more features and enhanced test specifications, but this is the official starting point for members in the development of KNX IoT products.
**A new overview for application notes**
Just as important is the fact that with every major release, KNX tries to improve the readability of the KNX Standard by including the application notes in the body text of the KNX Standard. Application notes are specification documents separate from the body text, which lay down system extensions and corrections to and from the body text. When all of these are integrated, all requirements are found in one single place, instead of being spread over multiple documents.
**Key areas of improvement**
The KNX Standard now includes specifications for three supported media (TP, PL and RF in its Ready and Multi flavours), one common system stack (including all of the allowed profiles), security mechanisms for KNX Classic (KNX Secure), KNXnet/IP specifications and now also specifications for KNX IoT 3rd Party and Point API (including their own security requirements). Naturally, still included are updated versions of the Hardware Requirements, Certification Manual, Application Specifications, Test Specifications, Requirements for Basis & System Components and Application Specific Standards such as Logical Tag Extended and M-Bus Mapping.
**Available now for KNX Members, public release planned**
Members had been eagerly awaiting a stable version, especially for the KNX IoT extensions, in spite of the fact that precursor versions had been published in previous years. For the finalisation of developments and start of certification of corresponding devices, such major releases are a must. Following publication, all members who have signed the IPR (Intellectual Property Rights) License Agreement will now be invited to come forward with any necessary patents they may hold on aspects that are explicitly described in the standard or are necessary to meet the requirements imposed by the standard. This process normally takes approximately a year to finalise.
Once the IPR process has been finalised, KNX Association plans to offer version 3.0 for download by anyone via MyKNX, not just KNX members.

For a list of all nominees with project details and further updates about the KNX Awards, visit [https://awards.knx.org](https://awards.knx.org).
**New categories for innovative use of KNX and project type**
The KNX Awards is not new competition; already for the 14th time, KNX Association is setting the stage for the most ambitious KNX projects worldwide. The technical refinement, innovative use of KNX and use of different manufacturers were always regarded more important than the mere size of the project. Despite that, we wanted to make sure installers of the residential sector were not discouraged to show their KNX smart home achievements. That is why the former “International” category has now been split into the Smart Home Award and the Smart Building Award. Another newcomer is the Innovation Award. KNX Association is always looking forward to be ahead with the latest technological advancements in the industry and wanted to reward the KNX projects that do the same. For this edition, the focus of the Innovation Award was on KNX projects where KNX Secure solutions and IoT was implemented.
**KNX community now serves as Jury for 2 categories**
As it was in the previous editions of the KNX Awards, all nominated projects also have the chance to win a 2nd KNX Award: the People’s Choice Award. The KNX community will have the chance to select their favourite KNX project on our special voting platform. But for the first time, everyone will have the chance to be part of the jury for a brand-new category: the KNX Product Award. A selection of recent KNX products will be presented and visitors of the special voting platform can show their appreciation for the KNX product of their choice. In this way, the winning KNX member can get some extra appreciation for their efforts in developing innovative KNX products. The voting platform is active in the month of August and can be reached at https://contest.tools.knx.org/vote.

**400 KNX Secure devices and counting, bringing added value to KNX installations**
Cybersecurity and the broad portfolio of KNX Secure devices have been in focus for a long time. This has grown in recent years through heavy investments by both KNX Members and KNX Association in the development of tangible KNX Secure products and solutions. KNX Secure is designed to meet the highest encryption standards according to ISO 18033-3, such as AES 128 CCM encryption, to effectively prevent attacks on the digital infrastructure of buildings. In 2022, it received the “Information security tested Smart Home and Building” certification from the VDE (Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies). This VDE certification, along with the robust KNX certification of each individual KNX Secure product, underlines that KNX Secure protects KNX installations even better against possible cyber-attacks. Today, more than 400 KNX Secure devices are certified. All of these products have been subjected to the stringent KNX certification process, in which their conformity to the implemented AES128 authentication and encryption mechanisms was put to the test. The interplay of KNX Secure technology, KNX Secure products and the ETS configuration tool brings a new dimension of added value to KNX installations.
**Energy Management with KNX has become a European standard in the smart home industry**
KNX has also paved the way in the field of energy management: together with other associations, a new Energy Management standard in homes has been designed by CENELEC TC 205, the relevant technical committee for developing standards in home and building automation. Recently, it has become a European standard, EN50491-12. KNX and its KNX Members have developed new products and solutions, such as: the control of PV panels, charging stations, home battery control, heat pump control, white-good appliances, customer energy manager and more. Combined with already existing traditional applications like smart metering and timers, KNX offers the possibility to integrate all possible energy management applications using only the KNX ecosystem. Thus, commercial and domestic building companies can find the right approach for their business case.
**ETS is continuously evolving**
In this KNX ecosystem, ETS has become the most important tool, as it is the only tool capable of configuring the portfolio of more than 8,000 KNX devices from more than 500 manufacturers, used by more than 100,000 certified installers. Due to its importance, KNX is constantly releasing new features for this tool: one of them is the cloud licensing model, which offers two different types of licenses, an ETS6 license on a dongle or in the cloud. This is very practical for those who want to start using ETS right away, as they can download and license it in a minute. In addition, KNX now offers all KNX newcomers the opportunity to get started with KNX without spending a single cent. All they need to do is successfully pass the online eCampus training to get a free ETS Lite license. The course can be attended for free at: [https://ecampus.knx.org](https://ecampus.knx.org)
